The Philippine Postal Corporation has deployed its mail delivery trucks to assist in the relief and rescue operations led by the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) following the devastation caused by Typhoon Carina (international name Gaemi).

“As per coordination with the OCD Operations Center, the Post Office has prepositioned mail vehicles at Central Mail Exchange Center (CMEC) to OCD compound, General Headquarters to help in the rescue and relief effort,” said Post Office chairman and postmaster general/CEO Mike Planas.

“(Our) 6-wheeler trucks are already at OCD Response Unit awaiting the release of relief goods from OCD storage site. There is also a standby 10-wheeler truck for possible dispatch in case the OCD needs it,” he added.

In an effort to bolster relief operations, the postmaster general has instructed all area directors nationwide to provide a list of available mobility assets. He has also requested the identification of facilities that could serve as hubs or logistics centers for future OCD relief efforts.

PHLPost has offered its mail operations hubs as temporary shelters for typhoon victims.

Mega Manila director Alvin Duron has identified several facilities, including the Malolos, Baliuag, Bustos Post Offices in Bulacan; the Imus and Dasmariñas City Post Offices in Cavite; and multiple locations within the National Capital Region such as Makati, Quezon City, Manila Central, Pasig, Pasay, and Parañaque Post Offices.

In the provinces, Northwest Luzon Area director Jun Malacapo has recommended several facilities to be used as government hubs for relief efforts. These include the Pampanga Mail Distribution Center in San Fernando; Sub Distribution Centers or SubDCs in San Fernando, La Union, Dagupan, Tarlac, Laoag (Ilocos Norte), Vigan (Ilocos Sur); and Olongapo (Zambales).

Vehicles at these locations are on standby for relief and rescue operations.

Meanwhile, Planas also urged all post office employees in need of rescue or relief to contact their respective area directors or send a message through PHLPost’s official Facebook page for emergency assistance.
