Port operator Westports Malaysia Sdn Bhd set a new container volume record by handling 23,183 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) for a single vessel.
The multi-cargo terminal operator said it registered the record with the mega ship CMA CGM Antoine de Saint Exupery when she called at Westports Malaysia between November 4 and 6, 2020 during her regular eastbound FAL 1 service, which connects Asia to Northern Europe.
“Westports deployed 9 Ship-To-Shore Cranes to perform the feat on the 400-meter long vessel,” the company said in a written release.
Its team worked around the clock and achieved a high overall vessel productivity level of 286 vessel gross moves per hour (VGMPH) in the 46 hours of handling the containers.
Gross moves per hour for a single vessel call is defined as the total container moves (onload, offload and repositioning) divided by the number of hours for which the vessel is at berth.
“The achievement reflects the commitment and dedication of Westports’ staff in planning and carrying out the operations seamlessly for our clients,” said Westports Malaysia.
The terminal, located on Pulau Indah, Port Klang, is one of the main transhipment hubs in Southeast Asia for international container ships.
Last month, sister ship CMA CGM Jacques Saade, the world’s first liquefied natural gas-powered container ship with a capacity of 23,000 containers, set a world record for the number of full containers loaded on a single vessel, carrying 20,723 full containers upon departing Singapore.
Also last month, Vietnam’s Cai Mep International Terminal (CMIT) welcomed a Maersk Line container ship with capacity of almost 20,000 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs), the largest commercial container ship to ever berth in Vietnam.
