Cargoes handled at Mactan-Cebu International Airport (MCIA) soared 23.6% in the first seven months of 2025 with both domestic and international shipments recording double-digit growth, data from Mactan-Cebu International Airport Authority showed.
MCIA recorded 42.955 million kilograms (kg) of air cargo from January to July, up from the 34.757 million kg posted in the same period last year.
Of the total, domestic cargoes accounted for 60.7% or 26.082 million kg, which was 17.5% higher than the 22.192 million kg last year.
International cargoes also saw higher volumes during the period, totaling 16.873 million, up 34.3% from 12.565 million kg.
Flights at the Cebu gateway climbed 1.6% to 57,537 in the first seven months of the year from 56,649 flights in the same period last year.
Domestic flights, which accounted for 81% of the total, increased 1.1% to 46,596 flights from 46,097.
International flights likewise improved 3.7% to 10,941 from 10,552 flights last year.
In terms of passenger traffic, MCIA recorded a 4.9% increase to 6.862 million passengersfrom 6.540 million during the period in review, mainly due to an increase in domestic passengers, which rose 6.6% year-on-year to 5.164 million.
International passengers also saw modest growth of 0.2% year-on-year to 1.698 million.

Recently, MCIA has been formally recognized as one of the Best Airport (5-15 Million Passengers Per Annum category) in Asia-Pacific for 2024 at the Airports Council International World ASQ (Airport Service Quality) Awards.
Last January 30, MCIA inaugurated its 2.56-kilometer alternate runway, which is designed to meet increasing air traffic demand and accommodate passenger and cargo volumes. The alternate and first runways are expected to simultaneously be operational by 2028, increasing the airport’s capacity to cater up to 18 million passengers a year. – Roumina Pablo
