Mets Cold Storage Services, Inc. (MCSSI) has signed an agreement with First Gen Corp. for the supply of green energy to its cold storage facility in Cagayan de Oro City.
The contract covers up to 2,050 kilowatts for the METS Cagayan de Oro facility, which provides over 22,000 metric tons of vital cold storage capacity in Northern Mindanao, MCSSI said in a media release.
“This shift to geothermal energy is more than a power supply agreement; it’s a tangible demonstration of our commitment to a low-carbon future,” METS chief financial officer Eileen Tio-Ty said.
“Reliable, clean power is non-negotiable for safeguarding the food and medical supply chain . By partnering with First Gen, we are simultaneously ensuring operational stability, achieving our ambitious sustainability goals, and driving down long-term energy costs,” Tio-Ty added.
The renewable energy (RE) will be sourced from the Mt. Apo Geothermal Power Plant in Cotabato, owned and operated by Energy Development Corp., First Gen’s 100% renewable energy company.
“Reliable and sustainable power is the bedrock of cold storage operations that safeguard food and medicine,” said Arlene Sy-Soriano, assistant vice-president and head of sales and engagement at First Gen. “Our partnership with METS demonstrates the critical role that indigenous geothermal energy plays in strengthening the Philippine cold chain while promoting genuine environmental stewardship.”
Established in 2010, MCSSI has more than 100,000 pallet positions in its cold storage facilities across the country, including Cavite, Bulacan, and Cebu, apart from Cagayan de Oro. It offers various solutions, including air-conditioned storage, blast freezing, and toll processing.
First Gen has a total geothermal capacity of 1,200 megawatts. Its RE portfolio includes hydro, wind, and solar projects with a combined installed capacity of over 400 MW. The Lopez-led firm also operates four gas-fired power plants with a total capacity of 2,017 MW in partnership with Prime Infrastructure Capital, Inc.
