Manila International Container Terminal’s (MICT) continuous expansion through infrastructure enhancements, equipment upgrades, and digital transformation is in support of growing trade volumes, operator International Container Terminal Services, Inc. (ICTSI) said in a statement.
To meet rising demand, MICT is constructing Berth 8 designed for ultra-large container vessels of up to 18,000 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU) capacity, ICTSI said in a statement.
It will also add 200,000 TEUs of yard capacity and raise the terminal’s volume handling capability to 3.5 million TEUs per annum. The additional yard space will support the new berth while easing yard utilization for increased maneuverability, ICTSI added. Berth 8 is expected to be completed by 2027.

As part of its sustainability strategy, MICT continues to incorporate hybrid and near zero-emission equipment into its operations. The terminal recently deployed eight new zero-emission rubber-tired gantries, complementing a fleet that is now 83% hybrid.

Plans are also underway to acquire electric trucks and establish electric vehicle charging infrastructure at the terminal, advancing efforts to reduce emissions. ICTSI has committed to cut greenhouse gas emissions per container move by 26% per container move by 2030 and achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.
Gate operations have also been streamlined with 14 automated lanes and six optical character recognition portals. ICTSI said these upgrades have cut average truck dwell time to 47.82 minutes, while pre-truck manifesting gate transaction has been reduced to a mere 48 seconds.
Other new equipment deliveries include 43 terminal trailers, 17 skeletal trailers and 11 tractors.
Further, a new yard management system has been deployed that optimizes container stacking, enhances visibility, and improves resource allocation to ease bottlenecks.
To further enhance service efficiency, MICT has introduced digital solutions, including the ICTSI App, which provides real-time vessel, container, and truck tracking, along with billing computation and electronic interchange receipts. E-wallet payments also enable automated fee deductions, expediting import clearance and gate-out processing. SMS notifications now alert truck drivers on container hold releases and truck instruction documents upon gate-in. Free WiFi access within the terminal for truck drivers has also been introduced.
“MICT’s expansion and modernization efforts align with the country’s economic needs and goals. These further underline the terminal’s central role in the country’s logistics and supply chain resilience as well as its prominence as a gateway for global trade,” ICTSI said.
