International Container Terminal Services, Inc.’s (ICTSI) flagship Manila International Container Terminal (MICT) is partnering with Intelligent E-Processes Technologies Corp. (IETC) to enable a faster gate process for trucks at MICT.

The partnership will enable radio frequency identification (RFID) scanners at MICT’s terminal gates to read Autosweep tags and match the trucks’ plate numbers, resulting in faster gate access and process, ICTSI said in a statement.

This provides MICT an alternative way to identify trucks’ license plate numbers when they pass through the terminal’s gates.

Autosweep RFID, which is managed by IETC, is one of the primary RFID systems used in expressways in the country, particularly in Luzon. IETC is a subsidiary of San Miguel Corp., which operates several expressways in the country.

MICT’s gates are automated and have been unmanned since 2015. It utilizes optical character recognition, license plate recognition and RFID technologies to facilitate the entry and exit of trucks.

Over the years, however, one of the challenges the terminal has experienced with its automated gates is the low success rate of its license plate recognition cameras due to the poor condition of the plates mounted on some trucks, explained MICT Information Technology Systems and Services director Reynaldo Mark Cruz.

He added that there were even some trucks that use laminated paper to display their motor vehicle file numbers.

“Using Autosweep’s RFID tags as a second alternative to identifying trucks addresses this problem and speeds up our gate operations,” Cruz said.

“Our investment in RFID technology is part of our constant effort to optimize the flow of cargo to and from the terminal,” he added.

For trucks transacting with MICT that do not yet have Autosweep tags, IETC is deploying personnel at MICT this month to offer free Autosweep tag installation.

ICTSI said MICT’s technology investments over the years have made operations more efficient, and shielded the terminal from supply chain disruptions and allowed it to continue operating 24/7 to ensure the free flow of critical supplies during the pandemic.

ICTSI said MICT will continue to build on the gains from these technologies to further optimize its operation as it caters to increased demand resulting from the global economic recovery.
