Manila International Container Terminal (MICT) on September 26 received its first green containership to ever dock at the terminal.
Powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG), the 7,327-twenty-foot equivalent unit (TEU) CMA CGM Passion operates under CNC’s KCS (China-Singapore-Indonesia–Philippines) service, which offers direct sailings between South China and the Philippines.
CMA CGM Passion is also the largest-capacity boxship handled by MICT to date.
Singapore-based CNC is the intra-Asia shortsea specialist of CMA CGM.
KCS is a weekly service that connects key ports in China, Indonesia, and the Philippines, including Xingang, Dalian, Lianyungang, Qingdao, Singapore, Jakarta, Surabaya, and Manila. It also provides one of the fastest transit times from Qingdao to Singapore and Indonesia.
With the capability to accommodate the largest vessels being cascaded to the Philippines, MICT said it is well-positioned to enhance the country’s foreign trade by promoting stronger trade connectivity and making the Port of Manila more globally competitive.
“This landmark call reinforces our efforts to reduce the environmental impact of MICT’s operations, which include investing in hybrid rubber-tired gantries that require less fuel and generate cleaner emissions. We hope to handle more green ships as the industry moves towards decarbonization,” MICT chief operating officer Christian Lozano said in a statement.
MICT noted its efforts to minimize its environmental footprint have been recognized by the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Port Services Network with a green port status. Recent initiatives include improved wastewater management, circular economy practices, and biodiversity protection.
“This milestone does highlight the shared vision between the Philippines and CMA CGM of enhancing eco-friendly maritime solutions in the region and strengthen further Philippines’ competitiveness in global trade,” CMA CGM Asia Pacific chief executive officer Bo Wegener said in a speech during the launch of CNC’s first domestic service in the Philippines on September 27.
