Mindanao Container Terminal (MCT) recently took delivery of two Mitsui hybrid rubber-tired gantries (RTG), the first of its kind in Mindanao, expanding the Misamis Oriental port’s fleet to six units.

The deliveries are expected to improve yard productivity and overall terminal efficiency in MCT without significantly adding to the terminal’s carbon footprint, parent firm International Container Terminal Services, Inc. (ICTSI) said in a statement.

The Mitsui hybrid RTGs are powered by a combination of a lithium-ion battery and a smaller diesel engine unlike conventional RTGs that run 100% on fossil fuel.

“The hybrid RTGs make our operations more efficient and at the same time more environment-friendly because of the reduced emissions, allowing us to hit both our productivity and sustainability targets. We’re also commissioning additional equipment to meet expanding capacity requirements,” MCT general manager Aurelio Garcia said.

MCT is set to take delivery of a new side lifter within the year. In addition, a mobile harbor crane will arrive by the first half of 2023 to augment MCT’s two quay cranes and enable simultaneous handling of two longer vessels, ICTSI said.

The purchase of new equipment comes after the 100-meter berth extension and installation of dolphin mooring and inland bollards back in 2020.

ICTSI said these improvements address the increase in volume and service demand as the global economy slowly begins to recover from the impact of the pandemic.

MCT, located within the PHIVIDEC Industrial Estate in Tagoloan, provides full terminal operations and supports the Philippines’ agro-industrial sectors in Mindanao.

Currently, there are five foreign shipping lines calling the port: CMA CGM, Evergreen, RCL, Sealand, SITC, and Wan Hai. Two domestic liners, Lorenzo Shipping Corp., and MCC Transport Philippines, also call MCT.
