Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) saw 44% more passengers and 25% more flights during the long weekend of October 27 to November 5 compared to the same period last year, according to the Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA).
During this busy period, coinciding with the Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections on October 30 and All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day, NAIA handled 1.2 million passengers and 8,001 flights and maintained an on-time performance (OTP) rating of 84%.
The latest passenger traffic matched MIAA’s earlier projection, with 606,845 international passengers and 625,285 domestic passengers, averaging 123,213 passengers daily.
The highest peak in passenger volume for both domestic and international flights was recorded on November 5 with 134,353, a 39% rise from the previous year.
Of the total 8,001 flights for the period, 3,055 were international, 4,754 domestic, and 192 cargo and utility flights.
From November 1 to 5, despite exceeding 800 flights per day, MIAA maintained an average flight OTP of 84%. The highest OTP ratings of 89% were recorded on November 2 and 3, showing that the majority of flights adhered to international standards by departing and arriving within 15 minutes of the scheduled time, MIAA said.
“We are pleased with these results, which indicate the continuous recovery of the aviation sector from the COVID-19 pandemic. We find encouragement in the actual numbers aligning with our projections,” MIAA officer-in-charge Bryan Andersen Co said in a statement.
MIAA credited its terminal rationalization program for enhancing passenger handling and accommodation during the peak season. The program included terminal reassignments for select airlines to optimize the capacity of the four NAIA terminals.
“We attribute the smooth operations to the extensive preparations made not only by MIAA but also to the collaboration of our partners and stakeholders, including the airlines, ground handlers, and over 20 various government agencies operating at NAIA,” Co said.
