The Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) posted growth in cargo, passenger, and flight traffic in the first quarter of 2025, according to latest data from regulator Manila International Airport Authority.

From January to March 2025, NAIA recorded 159,296.97 metric tons (mt) of air cargo, a15.6% increase from the 137,822 mt in the same period last year.

Of the total, international cargoes accounted for 62.5% of the total with 99,589.36 mt, up 8.8% from 91,501.49 mt last year.

Domestic cargoes likewise surged 28.9% to 59,707.61 mt from 46,320.51 mt.

Flights at the country’s main hub slightly rose by 0.8% in the first quarter to 73,098 fights from 72,487 flights in the same quarter last year.

International and domestic flights grew 0.27% and 1.2% year-on-year to 28,556 and 44,542, respectively.

Passenger traffic improved 6.5% to 13.043 million from 12.251 million in the first quarter of last year.

Domestic passenger traffic increased 8.4% to 6.904 million while international passenger traffic grew 4.3% to 6.138 million.

For this year, improvements in NAIA will focus on infrastructure and streamlining operations to keep up with rising passenger demand, according to private operator New NAIA Infra Corp. (NNIC). The goal is to transform NAIA into a modern, efficient airport that can support the country’s goals for tourism and economic growth.

Once the NAIA transformation is complete as part of the 15-year contract won by NNIC last year, the airport’s capacity will increase from 35 million passengers to 62 million passengers and an uptick in air traffic movement from 40 movements per hour to 48. – Roumina Pablo
