Bureau of Customs commissioner Ariel Nepomuceno is staying put at the agency. He made the announcement amid widespread speculation that he will be appointed secretary of the Department of Transportation.
At a social gathering yesterday (November 18), Nepomuceno said he has made up his mind as early as two weeks ago to remain in BOC. He said he still wants to see many agency reforms through.
While smuggling may not be eliminated completely, he noted he was going to make sure the illegal activity will be difficult to pull off under his watch.
Speculation of movements in key government positions have been rife recently, culminating in changes at several agencies.
The opening salvo began with Internal Revenue commissioner Romeo Lumagui, Jr. who was replaced by Atty Charlito Mendoza, formerly Undersecretary at the Department of Finance and before that district collector at the Bureau of Customs-Port of Cebu.
Ralph Recto was then appointed Executive Secretary in place of Lucas Bersamin. Taking the place of Recto as Finance secretary is Frederick Go, previously the Special Assistant to the president for Investment and Economic Affairs.
Budget Secretary Amena Pangandamen has also resigned and was replaced by Rolando Toledo on an acting capacity.
