The P7.8-billion North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) Candaba 3rd Viaduct was officially inaugurated and opened to motorists on December 10.

The Candaba Viaduct is a five-kilometer bridge built in the 1970s. The 3rd Viaduct was constructed between two existing bridges connecting the towns of Pulilan, Bulacan and Apalit, Pampanga.

“The 3rd Viaduct enhances the capacity of this expressway, reduces congestion, and ensures faster, more efficient travel,” President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. said in a speech during the inauguration.

“By improving the movement of goods, services, and of people, we steer economic growth, expand opportunities for trade and tourism, and drive regional development,” Marcos added.

“The timing of this milestone could not be more opportune. As we enter the holiday season, a period marked by heightened activity and an influx of holiday travelers, this bridge becomes even more crucial,” the President said.

Part of tollway operator NLEX Corp.’s decongestion program, construction of the 3rd viaduct began in the third quarter of 2023 and was originally targeted for completion in 22 months.

To ensure timely completion, the project was divided into three zones. Zone 1, or the Pulilan section, opened to the public in August 2024, while the Zone 2 portion in Apalit became operational in October.

NLEX Corp. said the Candaba 3rd viaduct will enable greater mobility for motorists and businesses, boosting socio-economic growth.

Serving as a vital link between Metro Manila, Central, and Northern Luzon, the new bridge is expected to address the growing traffic demand in the north, contributing to tourism, trade, and commerce across the regions.
