busy subic portJapan-based carrier Nippon Yusen Kaisha Line (NYK Line) has doubled its weekly calls at Subic Port, a few months after it started its ad-hoc calls.

In an advisory, NYK said its Meteor service following the Singapore-Philippines-Taiwan-Japan route will be calling Subic weekly for its northbound and southbound legs. Subic port was added to the northbound service, which starts from Singapore then calls Subic, Manila, Kaohsiung, and finally Japan. The Meteor southbound, on the other hand, starts from Japan and ends in Singapore.

The northbound calls are on Mondays while southbound calls are on Tuesdays. The carrier is using five Panamax vessels for the service.

NYK made its first direct call to Subic in November last year, joining other carriers in using the port facility as an alternative to the then-congested Port of Manila.

The carrier’s weekly service in Subic is the first direct call from Subic to Singapore, a major transshipment port providing numerous connections to East Asia, the Middle East, South Asia, Europe, Africa, North America, Australia, and New Zealand.

It is also the first direct call from Japan to Subic in addition to the regular Taiwan-Subic call.

Currently, five carriers call Subic port every week—Wan Hai, APL, SITC, NYK Line, and Maersk Line, while one, Swire Shipping, calls once a month.
