Global box ships are poised to enforce rate hikes on Asia services starting August.

Hapag-Lloyd announced more general rate increases (GRIs), all effective from August 15.

The German carrier said rates for all cargo and all container types will increase for the following routes:

* East Asia to Mexico, Central America and West Coast of South America – US$500 per 20-foot equivalent unit (TEU).

* East Asia to the East Coast of South America – $500 per TEU

* East Asia to the Caribbean and Panama – $560 per TEU and $800 per 40-foot equivalent unit (FEU)

Meanwhile, Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) is imposing peak-season surcharges (PSSs) on the Asia-North Europe and Asia-Australia lanes.

A PSS of $350 per TEU will be levied on the Asia-North Europe trade lane starting August 1, while shipments from Asia to Australia will carry a PSS of $300 per TEU from August 15, the Swiss carrier said.

Marseilles-based CMA CGM is likewise setting rate increases from August.

Effective August 1, 2012:

* All Asian ports (including Japan, Korea, Taiwan , China, Hong Kong, Southeast Asia, Colombo, and Bangladesh) to all West Coast African Ports – $150 per TEU for dry, OOG’s, paying empties, break-bulk and reefer cargo

* India and the Middle East Gulf to all West Coast African ports on the MIDAS service – $150 per TEU

Effective August 5, 2012:

* Asia and Indian Subcontinent to US West Coast ports – Rate hikes for all dry cargo are $400 per TEU, $500 per FEU, $565 per 40-foot high cube, $635 per 45-foot high cube, and $800 per 53-foot high cube

* Asia and Indian Subcontinent to US IPI via US West Coast ports – Charges for all dry cargo will increase by $560 per TEU, $700 per FEU, $790 per 40-foot high cube, $890 per 45-foot high cube, and $1,120 per 53-foot high cube

* Asia to US East Coast and RIPI via US East Coast – Freight rates for dry shipments will be higher by $560 per TEU, $700 per FEU, $790 per 40-foot high cube, and $890 per 45-foot high cube

Effective August 15, 2012:

* Asia and Indian Subcontinent to US West Coast ports – $800 per 20-foot RF and $1,000 per 40-foot RH

* Asia and Indian Subcontinent to US IPI via US West Coast ports – $1,000 per 20-foot RF and $1,250 per 40-foot RH

* Asia to US East Coast ports – $1,000 per 20-foot RF and $1,250 per 40-foot RH

Earlier, Maersk Line said it will implement rate hikes on its Asia services from August 1. Shipments from Northeast Asia to Australia will rise by $300 per TEU and $600 per FEU.

The Danish shipping line’s other planned GRIs are as follows: Far East Asia to West Africa- $150 per TEU; Far East Asia to South Africa and the Indian Ocean Islands- $300 per TEU and $600 per FEU and 40-foot high-cube container; and Southeast Asia to Australia – $300 per TEU and $600 per FEU.

Maersk also announced rate increases from July 15 from Far East Asia to the east coast of South America. Dry cargo rates will be higher by $500 per TEU and $1,000 per FEU and 45-foot equivalent unit.
