The Philippines and Cambodia signed an air services agreement (ASA) on September 8 to facilitate travel between the two Asian countries.
The ASA allows designated airlines of the Philippines and Cambodia to enter into code-sharing alliances, operate charter flights, as well as exercise fifth freedom rights. The latter permits carriage of passengers and cargo between the two countries with an intermediate stop in a third destination.
The ASA was one of three agreements signed during President Ferdinand Marcos, Jr.’s three-day state visit to Cambodia. Marcos left for Cambodia on September 7.
The two other agreements are an amendment of the Memorandum of Understanding between the Philippine National Police of the Republic of the Philippines and the Cambodian National Police of the Kingdom of Cambodia on Cooperation in Combating Transnational Crime; and an MOU between the Commission on Higher Education of the Republic of the Philippines and the Ministry of Education, Youth, and Sport of the Kingdom of Cambodia on Cooperation in Higher Education.
In his speech during a joint press conference with Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet at the Peace Palace in Phnom Penh, Marcos emphasized “the importance of strengthening ties between our peoples with the hope of facilitating more seamless and frequent travel between our two countries.”
“There are more than 7,000 working Filipinos in Cambodia contributing mainly in the health, education, and development sectors of the country. They are a wonderful bridge between our two countries and cultures. And in turn, we welcome the appreciation of Cambodians for Philippine culture, education, and enterprise,” Marcos said.
“We are excited to see even more exchanges and visits between our two peoples,” he added.
