The Philippines remains the world’s second-leading exporter of pineapples in 2023, according to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations in its latest major tropical fruits market review.

In 2023, the country exported some 600,000 metric tons (MT) of pineapples, up 2.7% from the previous year.

According to the FAO report, the growth was primarily driven by higher Chinese demand for premium quality pineapples, which accounted for 43% of the Philippines’ exports of the fruit.

FAO said shipments to China increased 3% in 2023, especially those of the MD2 variety.

“In this regard, the long shelf life, year-round production cycle and attractive price-to-quality ratio of the MD2 pineapples, the main variety cultivated in the Philippines, proved to be a particularly strong selling point,” the FAO report said.

“However, amid changing consumer preferences, import growth continued to be driven not only by the need for higher volumes but also by growing demand for more premium pineapples, with the MD2 variety from the Philippines particularly sought after (in China),” the report added.

Japan (30%) and Korea (14%) were also mentioned as second and third key markets, respectively, for Philippine pineapple exports.

“Shipments of Filipino pineapples to both destinations expanded by some 6 to 8 percent in 2023,” the FAO report said.

The average export unit value of Philippine shipments to world markets reached $593 per ton in 2023, up 3.8% from the previous year, the report added.

FAO said global pineapple exports rose 3.9% to 3.2 million MT in 2023, determined largely by higher supplies from Costa Rica, the largest pineapple exporter in the world.

In the Philippines, the top growers of pineapples are found in Northern Mindanao, SOCCSKSARGEN, and Bicol Region according to the Philippine Statistics Authority’s major fruit crops quarterly bulletin.
