PH transport and storage sectors hit trillion-peso mark in 2023

Revenue generated from the Philippine transport and storage sectors reached P1.09 trillion in 2023, a 64.4% jump from P663.44 billion the previous year, based on the government’s Census of Philippine Business and Industry.

International air passenger transport recorded the highest income at P369.81 billion, accounting for 33.9% of the total, followed by logistics at P131.23 billion representing 12%, according to preliminary data from the Philippine Statistics Industry (PSA).

For other sub-sectors, service activities incidental to water transportation brought in P119.38 billion, freight forwarding with P80.75 billion, and messenger service with P67.14 billion.

Under the PSA definition, “The Transportation and Storage section (Section H) includes the provision of passenger or freight transport, whether scheduled or not, by rail, pipeline, road, water or air and associated activities such as terminal and parking facilities, cargo handling, and storage, among others. Also included in this section are the rental of transport equipment with driver or operator, and the postal and courier activities.”

As of 2023,there were 3,195 establishments engaged in transportation and storage activities, a  4.2% increase from 3,066 reported in 2022.

Among the industry sub-classes, freight truck operation led with 558 establishments or 17.5% of the total.

Freight forwarding services came in second with 525 establishments (16.4%) and logistics services with 403 establishments (12.6%).

The National Capital Region  or Metro Manila had the most number of establishments with 1,496 or 46.8%, followed by CALABARZON (Cavite-Laguna-Batangas-Rizal-Quezon) and Central Visayas with 314 (9.8%) and 306 (9.6%), respectively.

The Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao  recorded the least number with only nine transport and storage establishments.

NCR recorded the highest revenue at P930.06 billion (85.1%). Central Visayas ranked second with P55.71 billion (5.1%), then CALABARZON with P43.86 billion

Overall, the industry’s revenue per expense ratio stood at 1.21 with the P1.09 trillion revenue and P905.08 billion in total expenses.

This means that for every one-peso expense, the industry earned 21 centavos in 2023, higher than the previous year’s 1.10.  

Across industry sub-classes, service activities incidental to water transportation led with 1.85 followed by service activities incidental to air transportation with 1.76.

Fifteen other industry subclasses had a ratio higher than the national level.  

Among regions, Ilocos had the highest ratio of 1.55. This was followed by both the Cordillera Administrative Region and SOCCSKSARGEN (South Cotabato-Cotabato-Sultan Kudarat-Sarangani-General Santos City) with 1.52 and 1.36 ratio, respectively.

Eight regions had lower revenue per expense ratio than the national level.

For employment, there were 306,971 workers in the transport and storage sectors, up 38.6% year on year. 

In addition to this total employment number, there were 22,154 more workers hired on sub-contract agreement or under manpower agencies/contractors.

By industry sub-class, logistics services employed the highest number at 59,817 workers or 19.5% of the total. Inter-urban bus line operation and freight forwarding services followed with 31,624 (10.3%) and 30,328 (9.9%), respectively.

The total compensation paid by establishments amounted to P126.68 billion in 2023, growing 18.5% from P352,531 the previous year.
