The first phase of the Light Rail Transit Line 1 (LRT-1) Cavite Extension Project will open this month, according to private operator Light Rail Manila Corp. (LRMC).
“We are excited to share that LRT-1 Cavite Extension Phase 1 is all set to open this month,” LRMC president and chief executive officer Enrico Benipayo said during a Malacañang press briefing on November 7.
Benipayo added, “This project is expected to bring significant benefits to commuters, including reduced travel time, improved air quality, and economic growth in the region. We look forward to celebrating this milestone as a testament to the unwavering commitment of LRMC and our partners to provide a world-class transportation solution to the Filipino people.”
The project is expected to significantly improve connectivity to the south area of Metro Manila, easing traffic congestion and providing commuters with a faster and more convenient travel option.
LRMC said it has been working closely with the Department of Transportation (DOTr) and Light Rail Transit Authority (LRTA), as well as local government units and other partner government agencies, to complete the project.
Ongoing activities for Phase 1 include system integration works, commissioning of train sets, and operational readiness tests to ensure a safe and seamless integration of the existing LRT-1 system with the extended line. Additionally, automated entrance gates, ticket vending machines, and teller booths have been installed and tested.
The five new stations under Phase 1 are the Redemptorist – Aseana Station, MIA Road Station, PITX Station, Ninoy Aquino Avenue Station, and Dr. Santos (formerly Sucat) Station.
LRMC said all stations are designed with accessibility in mind, featuring elevators, escalators, and tactile guides to cater to the needs of persons with special needs. LRMC said it is committed to creating a safe and inclusive transportation environment for all passengers.
With the additional alignment, the stretch of LRT-1 will be extended to 26 kilometers (km) from the current 20 km.
Benipayo said once Phase 1 is operational, LRT-1 will have an additional operational capacity of 80,000 passengers during the first year of operations. He added that by 2029, the LRT-1 is expected to service 650,000 passengers daily.
Currently, the rail line services 320,000 passengers a day.
Once fully operational, the entire stretch of the LRT-1 Cavite Extension Project will reduce travel time from Baclaran in Parañaque to Bacoor, Cavite to 25 minutes.
