The Philippine Multimodal Transport and Logistics Association, Inc. (PMTLAI) and the Council of United Presidents (CUP) recently recognized four pillars of the freight forwarding industry for their role in building up both the group and the trade.

PMTLAI and CUP conferred the Lifetime Achievement Award to the following former association presidents and PMTLAI Council of Elders members:

  • Uldarico Brizuela, founder of AAI Worldwide Logistics
  • Bayani Coching, founder of Mercury Freight International (MFII) founder
  • Ramon de Leon, founder of Pac-Atlantic Lines (Phils) Inc.
  • Nelson Mendoza, president of Awards Cargo Agency Philippines Inc.

PMTLAI said the award, given on December 3 during the association’s Christmas party, is in recognition of their invaluable contributions to the group and as “testament to their enduring legacy, steadfast leadership, and the exemplary standard they continue to set for future generations in the field.”

The four have served as past presidents of the former Philippine International Seafreight Forwarders Association (PISFA) and Aircargo Forwarders Association of the Philippines, Inc. (AFPI), the precursors of PMTLAI.

The merger of PISFA and AFPI gave birth to PMTLAI in 2017. The united association was intended to build a stronger organization to represent the interests and promote advocacies of the freight forwarding and logistics industry.

Brizuela founded AAI, formerly Airlift Asia Inc., in 1981 as an airfreight forwarding company that has since grown to a group of companies which include air and sea freight forwarding, brokerage, warehousing, distribution and project cargo.

Coching founded MFII, whose name was inspired by the Roman god Mercury, in 1987 as a customs broker and cargo consolidator. Over the years, it has grown to offer total logistics services: sea freight, air freight, land transportation, ship agency and chartering, customs clearance, shipping documentation, project cargo handling, and warehousing and distribution.

Through its flagship company, Pac-Atlantic Lines (Philippines) Inc., the Pac-Atlantic Group was founded in 1987 by De Leon. The group now offers integrated and comprehensive logistics services encompassing the entire cargo-handling process.

Mendoza has served the industry in various capacities, including more recently the United Portusers Confederation, Inc. as former president and current executive vice president.
