The Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) inaugurated on March 8 Masbate port’s new operations building and transit shed.

The facility can accommodate 500 passengers from the previous capacity of 100 passengers, PPA said in a statement.

The new building integrates the passenger terminal block with the port operations and port management offices. Together with the new transit shed, the cost of the project is P142.03 million.

PPA general manager Jay Daniel Santiago said the opening of the building is in time for the coming Holy Week and will be beneficial to port users, particularly during peak season when the average daily passenger traffic surges to almost 5,000 from the usual 700 to 1,000 daily.

Santiago said the facility features gender comfort rooms, charging stations, a bigger breastfeeding room, and a prayer room.

Port Management Office Masbate acting port manager Oliver Rodulfo Jr. said the facility is the second-biggest in the Bicol region after Matnog port’s.

PPA also inaugurated a new 1,000-square-meter transit shed, which can accommodate cargoes through its automated access points.

Aside from the Masbate port operations building, PPA this month is set to inaugurate improved port terminal buildings in Coron, Palawan, and Calapan, Mindoro Oriental. The Calapan port terminal building is the biggest in the country.
