Ports under Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) jurisdiction are operating normally and expected to remain congestion-free, PPA spokesperson Eunice Samonte said in a briefing on December 1.

Yard utilization rate at the Manila International Container Port, the country’s biggest port, is at 84.98%, she said, adding: “Ibig sabihin, meron pang space at walang pagbabara o backlog, congestion dito sa ating mga ports (This means that there is still space and we have no backlog in our ports).”

With container traffic expected to increase though, Samonte said slight cargo delays may be experienced mainly with shipments originating from international ports such as Los Angeles and China. Domestic ports will remain congestion-free, she noted.

From January to October this year, she said container traffic increased 7.16% from the same period in 2021, marking a return to pre-pandemic rate of operation at PPA ports.

Samonte advised port passengers to refrain from paying individuals asking for insurance payments at PPA ports, noting  the activity is a scam with insurance fees already part of the price of passenger tickets.

A case is now under investigation based on complaints from the public, she said.

Updated Dec 5, 1:30pm, to specify yard utilization rate for Manila International Container Port.
