Port operator PSA International handled record container volumes of 91.5 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) at its port projects around the world in 2021.
The group’s volume increased by 5.6% over 2020, with flagship PSA Singapore contributing a record 37.2 million TEUs, up 1.6%, the company said in a statement.
PSA terminals outside Singapore handled 54.3 million TEUs, a year-on-year increase of 8.4%.
Tan Chong Meng, group CEO of PSA, said, “The world in 2021 continued on its roller-coaster ride with widespread supply chain disruptions and congestions coupled with sustained recovery in global trade and demand. Despite the multiple hurdles posed by the global pandemic, PSA contributed to keeping supply chains safe and open for our customers, partners and stakeholders worldwide.”
Tan said that looking ahead in 2022, the group expects supply chain issues to remain but also sees opportunities in the crisis.
“PSA will continue to seek win-win partnerships and innovate beyond port operations to provide more efficient and resilient cargo solutions that benefit the greater supply chain ecosystem and catalyze the shift towards sustainable trade,” he said.
The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore recently said that with a record-high container throughput of 37.5 million TEUs in 2021, the Port of Singapore remains as the world’s busiest container transshipment port
Singapore also kept its position as the top bunkering port, registering total bunker sales volume of 50.04 million tonnes in 2021, MPA said.
The republic also successfully defended its position as the world’s top maritime city during the pandemic, according to “The Leading Maritime Cities of the World 2022” published by DNV and Menon Economics.
