Starting May 1, public transportation units will operate at 50% capacity in areas under general community quarantine (GCQ).

The new rules handed down by the Department of Transportation are in keeping with physical distancing protocols aimed at fighting the coronavirus pandemic.

Public transportation remains prohibited in areas under enhanced community quarantine (ECQ).

Under GCQ, public utility drivers must apply for a special permit to operate at Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board offices or online.

Daily inspections at terminals and depots will be conducted by transport authorities to ensure physical distancing is complied with.

Rail operations

Meanwhile, LRT-1, LRT-2, MRT-3 and PNR will resume operations with limited capacity after the lifting of the ECQ on May 16, 2020.

Physical distancing (1-meter apart) will be strictly observed inside the trains and stations.

In keeping with Department of Health (DOH) guidelines, the following passengers will not be allowed to enter the train stations: 1)  those not wearing proper face mask; 2) those showing COVID-19 symptoms or with a registered body temperature of 37.8°C or higher; and 3) senior citizens, passengers aged 0-20, and pregnant women due to their susceptibility to COVID-19.

Regular disinfection and sanitation of train interiors, station premises and facilities will be conducted. In addition, handwashing or disinfectant stations will be installed to adhere to sanitary measures set by DOH.
