Feasibility studies for two railway projects — the San Mateo Railway and Northern Mindanao Railway — have been approved.

The Public-Private Partnership Center (PPPC)-Project Development and Monitoring Facility (PDMF) Committee on February 17 green lit the Department of Transportation’s (DOTr) request for P100 million for the studies, DOTr assistant secretary for planning and project development Leonel De Velez said in a statement.

He said both projects follow President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s directive to build more transport infrastructure, particularly railways, and are in line with the recently approved Philippine Development Plan 2023-2028 that prioritizes mass transit systems throughout the country.

The San Mateo Railway will connect San Mateo and Rodriguez in Rizal with the rest of the metropolitan railways in the National Capital Region.

The Northern Mindanao Railway, meanwhile, will initially serve the metropolitan area of Cagayan de Oro up to Laguindingan Airport. It may eventually connect with the rest of the Mindanao railway system, according to De Velez.

He added the feasibility studies will determine the alignment of the railways, the number of stations, and services; and through public-private partnership, both railways can be expected to have high levels of service, particularly in terms of comfort and reliability.
