Tanza Barge Terminal (TBT) is looking to welcome a third barge in the first quarter of next year, according to an official of Asian Terminals Inc (ATI).
ATI subsidiary Tanza Container Terminal Inc. (TCTI) operates TBT.
The two barges currently provide five to six services per week between TBT and another ATI-operated port — Manila South Harbor, ferrying import and export shipments from locators of MetroCas Industrial Estates Special Economic Zone (MIE-SEZ) in Tanza, Cavite, ATI assistant vice president for Commercial, Ports & Terminals Reginald Rivera told media at the sidelines of United Portusers Confederation’s recent 3rd Partners Forum.
The barges can carry around 100 forty footers each way and are operated by DP World, ATI’s strategic foreign shareholder.
Located within MIE-SEZ, TBT officially opened last year and is designed to handle almost 240,000 twenty-foot equivalent units annually.
With its container yard, causeway, berth, jetty, breakwater and deck facilities, the barge terminal is projected to save around 150,000 truck trips yearly.
Rivera said the barge terminal reduced the number of trucks traversing Roxas Boulevard, while also offering convenience to shippers and lessening carbon dioxide emissions.
The barge berth has two fixed harbor cranes, with the four-hectare yard complemented by two reach stackers and four internal transfer vehicles.
The Bureau of Customs last year granted TCTI a license to operate as an inland container terminal and container yard. – Roumina Pablo
