Haulers and Truckers Association in the Watersouth Inc. (HATAW) plans to acquire this year another tow truck to provide services for truckers in Manila South Harbor.
The plan follows demand and positive feedback on the first tow truck that was deployed last February at Manila International Container Terminal (MICT), HATAW president Atty. Ferdinand Manebo told PortCalls at a recent chance interview.
Manebo said the first tow truck was deployed because HATAW “saw a need and (because of) the clamor from our members and from the entire trucking industry.”
He said the truck is stationed near MICT, allowing it to respond to towing requirements within minutes and prevent stranded trucks from affecting port operations. The truck is heavy duty, capable of handling a truck carrying a loaded container.
“Before, it’s very difficult to find towing services that can offer that type of service. Ours is really designed for our members’ operations and typically that involves pulling a tractor head with a trailer chassis with a loaded container. So it’s capable of doing that safely on our public roads and bringing their vehicle to their destination,” Manebo said.
HATAW’s tow truck is not exclusive to members although members get a service discount. While stationed near MICT, the tow truck — operated and manned by a HATAW member trucker – can also respond to towing needs in other locations.
Manebo said the second tow truck will be deployed to Manila South Harbor and there are plans to deploy more tow trucks in other ports, such as Batangas and Subic.
