Tsuneishi launches world’s first methanol dual-fueled bulk carrier

Tsuneishi Heavy Industries (Cebu), Inc. (THI) launched the world’s first methanol dual-fueled Kamsarmax bulk carrier at its slipway in Cebu on July 17.

The vessel is scheduled to embark on its maiden voyage in January 2026 bound for East Asia, THI parent company Tsuneishi Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. said in a statement.

“This landmark achievement represents a significant step forward in THI’s commitment to shaping a more sustainable future for the maritime industry,” Tsuneishi said.

By adopting methanol as a propulsion fuel, the vessel reduces carbon dioxide emissions by 10%, nitrogen oxides by 80%, and sulphur oxide by 99% during operations compared to conventional vessels.

Moreover, the use of green methanol further advances the decarbonization of maritime transport, promoting environmentally responsible shipping practices, Tsuneishi added.

Assembled in April 2025 at West Cebu Estate, the 81,200-metric ton Kamsarmax vessel has been designed for exceptional versatility, featuring a shallow draft and low air draft to ensure compatibility with a wide range of global ports, the company said.

The 229-meter-long vessel can enter the narrow Kamsar Port, a major bauxite shipping port in the Republic of Guinea in the western part of Africa. Its length is the maximum allowable for entry at the port.

Seto earlier said THI will invest on new shipbuilding facilities for new type of vessels with dual fuel engines aiming to maintain and enhance the lifetime value of their vessels, benefitting customers and supporting environmental causes as an Environmental, Social & Governance based management.

THI said it will continue to forge ahead in its pursuit of a more sustainable future, inspiring progress in the maritime sector for generations to come.
