The upgraded Antique airport was inaugurated on January 19, featuring a much bigger passenger terminal building.
The P126-million development project for the airport – officially named Evelio B. Javier Airport but also referred to as San Jose airport – included a 2,224-square meter passenger terminal building (PTB), an expansion from the previous 181 sqm, able to accommodate 360 passengers from 64 previously, according to the Department of Transportation (DOTr).
Other improvements are new check-in counters, increased from two to six; modern baggage handling, flight information, and passenger systems expected to enhance overall convenience; and an upgraded control tower from three to seven storeys, improving visibility and flight safety operation.
A new ramp now also allows the airport to accommodate up to four jet aircraft simultaneously although jet operations are not expected to start until the fourth quarter of 2026.
Antique airport’s runway has been extended from 1,430 meters to 1,800 meters, allowing it to accommodate jet aircraft operations, significantly boosting connectivity and economic potential for the province, DOTr said.
President Ferdinand Marcos, Jr., in a speech during the inauguration, said the airport project is part of the government’s modernization program for Western Visayas.
He noted for example that Iloilo International Airport’s PTB is also being improved while its runway is being asphalted.
At the Roxas Airport, the runway is also being covered in asphalt and construction of a new control tower is slated this year.
Transportation secretary Giovanni Lopez said the DOTr will continue to fulfill Marcos’ goal to modernize regional airports and ensure efficient and fast travel experience for passengers and to boost economic growth.
