US semiconductor firms are exploring investment opportunities in the Philippines, with a team of industry stakeholders visiting the country to study its potential.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. met with representatives of the US semiconductor industry in Malacañang this week, led by John Neuffer, president of the Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA).

The SIA met with senior Philippine officials led by Special Assistant to the President for Investment and Economic Affair Frederick Go.

Trade and Industry Secretary Ma. Cristina Roque joined Go in representing the Philippines in the talks.

Aside from Neuffer, the US delegation included US ambassador to the Philippines MaryKay Carlson, SIA director Jennifer Meng, and the heads of Allegro Microsystems, Amkor Technology, Analog Devices, Microchip Technology, and OnSemi.

The SIA team is touring Southeast Asia to study the semiconductor ecosystem in each country they visit.

Go told the visiting executives: “Our government has identified the semiconductor industry as the priority sector for investment. This reflects its vital role in driving economic growth, technological innovation, and job creation.”

He added that the visit by the SIA “aligns with our efforts to position the country as a premier investment destination in the region and the global stage.”

Both sides agreed that the three main priorities are in expanding the assembly, testing, and packaging (ATP) sector; capacity building on IC design; and the proper education and upskilling of the future workforce for the industry.

The Philippine semiconductor industry has proven to be a major driver of the country’s economy, emerging as the country’s top export sector in 2023.

It generated almost $500 billion in exports and supporting around three million in direct and indirect employment.
