id-100428062The Philippines and Japan are expected to sign 12 deals worth an estimated $2 billion during President Rodrigo Duterte’s three-day official visit to Tokyo starting October 25.

Trade Secretary Ramon Lopez said most of the business-to-business deals between Philippine and Japanese firms will involve manufacturing and agriculture.

Lopez said there is a “buying commitment from a Japanese company to import fruits from the Philippines.”

Also expected, Lopez added, is official development assistance from Japan in support of training, technical cooperation as well as research and development in the Philippines.

The Duterte administration has been aggressively conducting trips overseas in a move to strengthen ties with regional neighbors.

Recent destinations included Laos, Indonesia, Brunei, and China, with the latter committing $24 billion worth of investment pledges and credit facilities to the country.
