  • China accounted for 1.06 million TEUs to lead the top 10 Asian countries that exported boxed products to the US in February

Asian manufacturers shipped a record 1.7 million 20-foot equivalent units (TEUs) of goods to the United States in February this year, an increase of 16.4% from the same month a year ago, the Japan International Freight Forwarders Association said in a press release on March 14.

JIFFA, which cited figures from the US research company Descartes Datamyne, said China led the top 10 Asian countries that exported containerized products to the US last month, accounting for 1.06 million TEUs, up 15.8% from the same month last year.

This was the 20th month in a row that Asian container exports to the US grew year on year, bringing about a new monthly record in February, the report said. The figures were based on volumes at ports of loading where containerized shipments were loaded aboard mother vessels.

For China, it was the 21st straight month that total container shipments to the US grew year on year to keep the country on the top spot, the report said.

Ranked second was South Korea, whose box exports to the US climbed 16.3% to 157,263 TEUs.

Exports from Vietnam swelled 17% to 134,143 TEUs, the country’s first year-on-year increase in five months that propelled it to the third-largest Asian exporter to the US.

Taiwan took the fourth place as it exports to the US increased the most at 33.6% to 87,745 TEUs, their first year-on-year expansion in two months.

In contrast, containerized exports from Singapore shrank 2.3% to 60,552 TEUs, placing the city state at the bottom of the top five.

Japan was the ninth-largest source of US-bound containers, exporting 28,298 TEUs, an increase of 26.1% that was its first year-on-year growth in six months.

The report did not provide the figures for the rest of the region’s top 10 exporters to the US last month.
