The Bureau of Customs (BOC)-Davao has seized 1,020 master cases of smuggled cigarettes with an estimated value of P28.872 million at Davao International Container Terminal, Panabo City, Davao Del Norte.
According to derogatory information received from the BOC’s Intelligence Group, the shipment was originally declared to contain 1,077 packages of assorted items such as plastic washbasins, plastic chairs, drainer baskets, and bond papers, BOC said in a statement.
However, physical inspection found misdeclared smuggled cigarettes, containing 1,000 master cases of Two Moon brand cigarettes and 20 master cases of Fort Menthol brand cigarettes.
BOC-Davao district collector Atty. Erastus Sandino Austria said they have already issued a Warrant of Seizure and Detention against the shipment consigned to Essafrank Consumer Goods Trading for violating Section 117 (Regulated Importation and Exportation) and Section 1400 (Misdeclaration, Misclassification, Undervaluation, in Goods Declaration) of the Customs Modernization and Tariff Act.
In 2021, BOC has filed cases against erring importers for the unlawful importation of cigarettes valued at P897.1 million.
