Hapag-Lloyd appoints Boenaes as COO, extends Bhatia contract

  • Bhatia has been a member of Hapag-Lloyd’s Executive Board since January 2024 and is CEO of Hanseatic Global Terminals

Anders Boenaes has assumed office as Hapag-Lloyd’s new chief operating officer effective October 1, 2026.

The company’s supervisory board also extended the contract of chief terminal & infrastructure officer Dheeraj Bhatia through December 31, 2029, Hapag-Lloyd announced.

Boenaes, 52, is a Danish national who began his maritime career with Maersk in Copenhagen in 1993. He became vice president and head of Africa Trades in 2009 and was appointed senior vice president for network at Maersk Liner Business in 2014.

He joined Hapag-Lloyd in 2020 as senior managing director for network and a member of the executive committee. In his current role, Boenaes is responsible for the company’s global liner network, container fleet, and global operations.

Hapag-Lloyd credited Boenaes’ experience with helping establish and implement the Gemini Cooperation, the operational partnership between Hapag-Lloyd and Maersk.

“Anders Boenaes is a perfect fit for the COO position, and we are very pleased to have found an internal candidate from within Hapag-Lloyd with profound knowledge of the business and the company. In recent years at Hapag-Lloyd he has proven his managerial and operational skills as senior managing director network ,” said Karl Gernandt, chairman of the supervisory board of Hapag-Lloyd AG.

Bhatia, 53, joined Hapag-Lloyd as managing director and initially headed the carrier’s India operations. Since 2018, he has been based in Dubai as senior managing director for the Middle East, Indian Subcontinent, and Africa.

He joined Hapag-Lloyd’s executive board in January 2024 and also serves as chief executive officer of Hanseatic Global Terminals, which consolidates the shipping line’s terminal and infrastructure holdings.

“Dheeraj Bhatia and his team have successfully established Hanseatic Global Terminals, laying the foundations for a global terminal operating platform through strategic investments and continuing to expand Hapag-Lloyd’s global terminal network,” Gernandt said.

“The supervisory board is convinced, that with the new set up of the executive board, the company is very well prepared to tap the various opportunities, but also to manage the challenges ahead,” he said.
