Cebu port cargo volume up 9.1% in Q1

Cargo handled by Cebu ports grew 9.1% in the first quarter of 2024 with both domestic and foreign cargoes posting increases, according to preliminary data from the Cebu Port Authority (CPA).

Ports under CPA jurisdiction handled 17.067 million metric tons from January to March from 15.639 million mt in the same period last year.

Domestic cargoes, which accounted for 79.7% of the total in the first quarter, saw a 5.7% rise to 13.607 million mt from 12.873 million mt in the first quarter of 2023.

Foreign cargoes posted a double-digit growth of 25% to 3.46 million mt from 2.766 million mt in the first quarter of last year.

Imports climbed up 26% year-on-year to 3.012 million mt while exports grew 19.4% year-on-year to 447,586 mt.

Container traffic

In terms of containers, Cebu ports recorded 234,787 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) in the first quarter of this year, 7% up from the 219,282 TEUs posted in the same period last year.

Domestic containers, which shared 51% of the total, slightly declined to 120,466 TEUs, 0.3% down from 120,826 TEUs in the first quarter of last year.

Domestic transshipments, meanwhile, increased 48% to 3,088 TEUs from 2,082 TEUs.

Foreign boxes rose 18% to 111,233 TEUs from 94,292 TEUs last year.

Exports increased 15.4% to 58,452 TEUs from 50,631 TEUs while imports grew 21% to 52,781 TEUs from 43,661 TEUs.

Shipcalls grew 8.1% year-on-year to 35,804 vessels as both domestic and foreign shipcalls recorded increases.

Domestic shipcalls rose 8% year-on-year to 35,563 while foreign shipcalls improved 10.6% year-on-year to 241 vessels.

Passenger traffic continued to improve, recording 4.851 million passengers in the first quarter, 19% higher than the 4.075 million passengers in the same period last year.

Rolling cargoes, which are all domestic, likewise surged 12% to 425,594 units from 380,279 units.

CPA’s jurisdiction is composed of the Cebu baseport and its subports that are located in different points of Cebu.

The Cebu baseport is composed of Cebu International Port and the baseport-domestic zone, while subports include the ports of Mandaue, Danao, Sta. Fe, Toledo and Argao. – Roumina Pablo
