International Container Terminal Services, Inc. (ICTSI) has purchased a 27-hectare property in Bauan, Batangas for use of its new international container terminal, the port operator said in a regulatory disclosure dated October 10.

Located in Barangays San Roque and San Andres I, the property is adjacent to another ICTSI property, and is part of the $800-million investment in Luzon International Container Terminal (LICT).

LICT will be the largest privately-funded marine terminal investment in the Philippines, and the country’s second-largest container facility after ICTSI’s flagship, Manila International Container Terminal.

Design and engineering studies for LICT are underway, with construction set to begin in early 2025.

Upon completion in 2028, LICT will feature up to 900 meters of quay and at least eight ship-to-shore gantry cranes. It will be able to accommodate mega ships, handle over two million twenty-foot equivalent units per annum, and integrate eco-friendly practices, ICTSI said.

Beyond expanding capacity, ICTSI said LICT is expected to support the Philippines’ renewable energy goals, particularly in Southern Luzon, noting that “the new terminal will meet growing demand for efficient and eco-friendly marine handling solutions in the region.”

ICTSI said the project will follow strict environmental guidelines to minimize disruption to the local ecosystem.

A key feature of LICT is its ability to handle mega ships. These larger vessels can carry significantly more cargo, helping reduce the number of vessels at sea by transporting more cargo in fewer trips. This leads to lower fuel consumption, reduced greenhouse gas emissions, and less congestion on shipping routes.

Aside from the new container terminal, ICTSI, through its subsidiary, operates Bauan International Port Inc., a roll-on/roll-off and project cargo terminal.
