Adriatic Gate Container Terminal (AGCT), International Container Terminal Services, Inc.’s (ICTSI) operation at the Port of Rijeka in Croatia, has handled four million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) since joining the ICTSI Group in 2011.
The milestone comes five years after AGCT crossed the two million-TEU mark and reflects growth in container traffic through Croatia’s largest seaport and AGCT’s expanding role as a regional Adriatic gateway, ICTSI said in a statement.
“Over the past 15 years, AGCT has become an increasingly important link between global shipping networks and inland markets across Central and Southeast Europe,” said Hans-Ole Madsen, ICTSI senior vice president and Europe, Middle East, and Africa regional head.
Much of AGCT’s cargo moves beyond Croatia through rail and road connections to key hinterland markets, including Austria, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Serbia and Slovakia.
“Continued investment in infrastructure, equipment and intermodal connectivity has strengthened Rijeka’s position within regional supply chains and improved access to international trade for customers throughout the terminal’s hinterland,” Madsen added.
The achievement coincides with AGCT’s 15th year with ICTSI. Since 2011, the terminal has expanded capacity to accommodate increased volumes and larger vessels.
“Reaching four million TEUs as we mark 15 years with ICTSI reflects the progress AGCT has achieved,” said Iñigo Nuñez Mendibe, AGCT chief executive officer.
In late 2025, AGCT completed a €35 million (US$40 million) investment program that added two super post-Panamax quay cranes and two hybrid rubber-tired gantry cranes.

The quay cranes allow AGCT to handle the largest container vessels calling at Adriatic ports, while the hybrid gantries increase yard capacity and reduce fuel consumption. AGCT is also replacing diesel-powered terminal tractors with electric units and converting existing rubber-tired gantry cranes to hybrid operation.
“This development reflects the commitment of our employees, the confidence of our customers and the partnerships we have built across the Port of Rijeka community,” Mendibe said.
In March 2011, ICTSI forged a 30-year strategic partnership with Luka Rijeka D.D. for the operation, management, and development of AGCT at the Port of Rijeka, Croatia’s main seaport.
