  • The Clark facility will cover approximately 157,000 square meters and accommodate up to nine widebody aircraft bays, with initial operations targeted to start in 2028
  • The investment is expected to create around 1,200 highly skilled jobs over the coming years

Lufthansa Technik Philippines (LTP) is significantly expanding its presence in the country with the development of a new base maintenance facility at Clark International Airport (CRK) in Pampanga — a move that marks a new chapter for one of the Philippines’ most established aviation maintenance operations.

The announcement coincided with the official state visit of German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier to Manila, where he and Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. witnessed the presentation and exchange of the signed lease agreement among LTP, the Bases Conversion and Development Authority, and CRK operator Luzon International Premiere Airport Development Corp. at Malacañan Palace. Both heads of state acknowledged the project as a milestone in German-Philippine economic cooperation.

The lease agreement, which was signed last May, covers the 157,000-square-meter site within the Clark airport complex. The new facility is intended to offer capacity for up to nine widebody aircraft bays, with first operations scheduled to commence in 2028, according to LTP parent firm MacroAsia in a regulatory disclosure on June 16.

The three-digit million-dollar investment will create around 1,200 highly skilled jobs over the coming years, Lufthansa Technik said.

MacroAsia, which holds 49% of LTP with the remaining stake owned by Hamburg-based Lufthansa Technik AG, said the Clark facility will complement LTP’s 23-hectare technical base and hangar for MRO operations at NAIA and help establish the Philippines as a stronger widebody aircraft MRO hub in the Asia-Pacific region.

The expansion addresses a practical constraint: the MacroAsia ecozone in Manila is already fully developed and space-constrained, making Clark a strategic move to accommodate increasing maintenance requirements beyond NAIA.

Soeren Stark, CEO of Lufthansa Technik, said: “Asia-Pacific is one of the fastest-growing aviation markets in the world, and the Philippines are central to our strategy in this region. With the investment in the new site in Clark, we are taking the next decisive step in our growth strategy and positioning Lufthansa Technik for the future of aviation — well beyond the borders of this region.”

Holger Beck, CEO of Lufthansa Technik Philippines, said: “With the new base maintenance location in Clark, we are making a significant investment in the Philippines and substantially expanding Lufthansa Technik’s network in the country and across the Asia-Pacific region. Our sites in Manila and Clark will complement each other as two strong pillars of our growth, and together they mark an exciting new chapter for Lufthansa Technik Philippines.”

The Clark facility will add the Boeing 787 to LTP’s existing portfolio, which currently covers the Airbus A330, A340, A350, and A380, as well as the Boeing 777 — making LTP the competence center for widebody aircraft within Lufthansa Technik’s global network.

LTP will join other MRO service providers already operating at Clark, including SIA Engineering (Philippines) Corp., Aviation Partnership Philippines, and Metrojet Engineering Clark Ltd., among others.

With both the Manila and Clark facilities, Lufthansa Technik is well positioned to meet growing demand from airline customers across Asia, Australia, Europe, and the Middle East. The expansion underscores the company’s long-term commitment to the Philippines as a strategic hub in the region — a commitment now more than 25 years in the making.

Lufthansa Technik Philippines is a joint venture between Lufthansa Technik AG of Hamburg, Germany, and Philippine aviation support services firm MacroAsia Corporation. Operating from a 23-hectare technical base at Ninoy Aquino International Airport in Manila, LTP is the leading widebody aircraft MRO provider in the Philippines and serves as the competence center for widebody aircraft maintenance within Lufthansa Technik’s worldwide network. It specializes in the maintenance, repair, and overhaul of Airbus A330, A340, A350, and A380, as well as Boeing 777 aircraft, with the Boeing 787 to be added upon the opening of its Clark facility.
