NLEX (North Luzon Expressway) Corporation has stepped up flood control, emergency preparedness, and pavement repair work across its expressway network as the rainy season sets in, extending its efforts beyond its tollways to help unclog waterways in surrounding urban communities.

As part of its wider flood control initiatives, NLEX said it expanded its efforts beyond the expressway corridor by conducting clean-up activities in important rivers and creeks in Valenzuela, Caloocan, and Manila, aligning with the government’s Oplan Kontra Baha program.

Between January and May, NLEX teams cleared accumulated garbage and silt from congested, narrow waterways in densely populated communities around the expressway.

To bolster flood resilience, NLEX pre-positioned portable flood barriers at low-lying sections of the expressway, along with rescue boats and other emergency response assets.

The company also installed additional early-warning cameras at critical creek crossings along the expressway, enabling real-time water-level monitoring to support faster deployment of response units and timely traffic advisories.

NLEX said it is maintaining close coordination with national government agencies and local authorities for a synchronized response to severe weather events, with emergency and traffic operations teams to remain fully deployed for the duration of the rainy season.

On the maintenance front, the company has mobilized teams for pavement repairs across the NLEX and Subic-Clark-Tarlac Expressway network, including an asphalt overlay project between Ciudad de Victoria and Bocaue. Additional safety measures include roadside shoulder drainage improvements and tree trimming to reduce the risk of falling branches during strong winds.

“Having cleaned critical and flood-prone waterways in surrounding areas affecting the expressway, we believe that stormwater can now flow more freely and help reduce the risk of overflows that sometimes reach the expressway,” said NLEX president and general manager Luis Reñon.

“We deeply appreciate the partnership with the DPWH (Department of Public Works and Highways), TRB (Toll Regulatory Board), MMDA (Metropolitan Manila Development Authority), and the LGUs (local government units) in these clean-up operations, and we join them in encouraging residents to help keep waterways free from trash,” Reñon added.

NLEX Corporation is a subsidiary of Metro Pacific Tollways Corporation, the toll road arm of Metro Pacific Investments Corporation.
