NorthPort unveiled four new hybrid rubber-tyred gantry (RTG) cranes today, October 22, 2026, in a blessing ceremony at Pier 10 in Manila North Harbor Port, the Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) said in a media release.

The PPA said the new RTGs should speed up the lifting, arranging and stacking of cargo in the yard. The cranes use hybrid engine technology, which should reduce diesel consumption and carbon emissions. The four units are due to start operating in November 2026.

The PPA said the cranes support its green port initiatives, which aim to reduce the environmental impact of port operations by using more efficient, environmentally friendly equipment.

Present during the unveiling were Jenneliza Rebong, manager of the PPA’s Port Management Office (PMO) National Capital Region-North Port, and Stuart Finch, NorthPort’s chief operations adviser, along with representatives of NorthPort and the PMO.

NorthPort’s mobile harbor cranes (MHCs) and vehicles were also blessed. The PPA described this as part of the terminal’s upgrade of its port equipment.

NorthPort, the domestic terminal in Manila North Harbor operated by International Container Terminal Services Inc., ordered the four hybrid Mitsui RTGs in late 2025.

In October 2025, ICTSI converted six existing NorthPort RTGs to hybrids by replacing their diesel generator sets with smaller generators and adding liquid-cooled battery systems. NorthPort said the hybrid units then in service had cut carbon emissions by 49%, lowering the terminal’s estimated annual emissions from 2,186 tons to 1,109 tons.

NorthPort also bought two Konecranes Gottwald ESP 5 mobile harbor cranes last year. They have a 41-ton lifting capacity and 46-meter outreach across 13 bays, and they work at Pier 10 to prepare Terminal 2 for the future. The terminal said the added capacity lets it serve more vessels at once and improves quayside productivity and berth use.

The PPA has pursued its Green Port program since 2016, as General Manager Jay Daniel Santiago said in 2021, with a focus on sustainable operations and a smaller carbon footprint.
