Philippine Airlines recently airlifted close to 20 tons of humanitarian cargo for affected residents in quake-hit Cebu.
The Lucio Tan Group and Asia Brewery donated 3,000 three-liter water containers totaling 19 tons, while the Philippine Red Cross donated quick response (hygiene kits), and psychosocial kits totaling 654 kilos (0.654 tons).
The PAL Foundation, Inc., the corporate social responsibility arm of PAL, facilitated the transport of humanitarian cargo in coordination with the PAL Cargo teams in Manila and Cebu.
In a statement, the flag carrier said, “PAL will continue to extend urgent assistance to fellow Filipinos affected by the recent quake. These efforts will be undertaken within the capabilities of our available aircraft, as we carry out humanitarian missions alongside our regular flight schedules.”
An earthquake struck Cebu’s northern tip near Bogo City on September 30, causing massive infrastructure damage and power outage in several areas. As of October 13, the death toll has been registered at 75.
Eleven days later, on October 10, parts of eastern Mindanao were also rocked by a “doublet” earthquake on October 10 measuring 7.4 and 6.7 to 6.8 on the Richter scale. Both events raised tsunami warnings for seven provinces and parts of Indonesia, with minor tsunami waves observed. Hundreds of aftershocks were recorded.
