Toshiba Corporation is planning a multi-billion-peso investment over the next three years to expand its hard drive production capacity in the Philippines, a move expected to create around 3,000 jobs and strengthen the country’s role in global technology supply chains.

Finance Secretary Frederick Go recently met with Toshiba officials led by chief operating officer and senior executive vice president Koji Ikeya to discuss the company’s plans to increase production of nearline hard disk drives (NL-HDDs) in the Philippines.

“We see Toshiba’s planned expansion as an opportunity to strengthen our industrial base, build an electronics and tech industry ecosystem that creates quality jobs for Filipinos, and position the Philippines to capture opportunities in the growing global technology and data economy,” Go said in a news release.

NL-HDDs are high-capacity storage devices used in applications such as data centers, where demand for storage is increasing amid the growth of cloud computing, artificial intelligence, digital services and other data-intensive technologies.

The planned expansion builds on Toshiba’s more than three decades of manufacturing operations in the Philippines, which serves as a major production base for the company’s global hard disk drive business.

Go and representatives of the Philippine Economic Zone Authority assured Toshiba of the government’s commitment to facilitate investment and support an environment conducive to long-term manufacturing.

“The Philippines has been an important part of Toshiba’s manufacturing operations for more than three decades. We remain committed to growing our presence here, building on the skills and dedication of our Filipino employees, and working with the Philippine government to advance our next phase of investment,” Ikeya said.

Toshiba marked 31 years in the Philippines after establishing Toshiba Information Equipment (Philippines), Inc. at Laguna Technopark in 1995 and starting operations in 1996.

The company now operates two major manufacturing facilities in Laguna, with its second site located at Carmelray Industrial Park 1 in Calamba.

Its Philippine operations encompass manufacturing and assembling hard disk drives, enterprise SSDs, advanced helium-filled HDDs, plus engineering, design, rework, and PCB assembly.
