AC Logistics Holdings Corp. and Glacier Megafridge, Inc. (GMI) broke ground for GRECO (Green Rise Engineered Cold Chain Logistics), a next-generation automated cold storage and distribution facility in Balintawak, Quezon City.

Located along EDSA in Balintawak, one of Metro Manila’s most critical logistics gateways, GRECO will be developed to serve the country’s largest consumption and distribution center, AC Logistics, which holds a majority stake in Glacier Megafridge, said in a statement.

Upon completion, the facility will provide approximately 25,000 automated pallet positions and support the growing demand for reliable, efficient, and sustainable temperature-controlled logistics solutions.

With a target operational date of February 2028, subject to regulatory approvals and construction progress, GRECO is envisioned to be among the leading automated cold storage facilities in the Philippines, supporting the continued modernization of the country’s cold chain network.

“GRECO marks a significant step in realizing AC Logistics’ ambition of expanding cold storage connectivity across the Philippines,” AC Logistics president and chief executive officer Erry Hardianto said.

“Through investments in modern, strategic infrastructure, we are strengthening the country’s cold chain network and enabling businesses to move products more efficiently, reliably, and sustainably,” Hardianto added.

No forklifts needed

The facility is planned to be powered by an automated storage and retrieval system (ASRS) utilizing advanced four-way shuttle technology. AC Logistics said this automation enables high-density storage, real-time inventory visibility, and faster order fulfillment while minimizing manual handling in temperature-controlled environments.

By eliminating the need for forklift operations inside freezer chambers and providing full system-controlled pallet tracking, the facility is expected to enhance throughput, inventory accuracy, and workplace safety. The result is a highly efficient and resilient cold chain facility built to support the growing needs of businesses across Metro Manila, AC Logistics noted.

GMI president and AC Logistics Cold Chain Solution product head Archie Yan said the groundbreaking of GRECO on October 23 “represents the future of cold chain logistics in the Philippines.”

“GRECO will combine automation, sustainability, and strategic location to better serve businesses that rely on dependable cold storage and distribution in Metro Manila,” Yan added.

Strategically located at the junction of EDSA and the North Luzon Expressway, GRECO is positioned to provide faster access to Metro Manila’s retail, food service, and distribution networks while strengthening connections to production centers across Central and Northern Luzon.

Tapping green energy

AC Logistics said sustainability has been embedded into the facility’s design from the outset. GRECO plans to utilize natural refrigerants, reducing environmental impact while supporting the Philippines’ broader transition to low-emission cooling technologies.

The development is being designed with a staged renewable energy strategy that includes energy-efficient facility systems, future rooftop solar installations, and opportunities to source renewable power through available green energy programs.

Beyond operational efficiencies, AC Logistics said the project aims to contribute to food security and supply chain resilience by increasing the availability of modern cold storage capacity near major consumer markets.

The development is also expected to generate employment opportunities during both construction and operations, including skilled roles in automation, refrigeration, engineering, and logistics.
