South Korean liner operator KMTC has ordered six 3,100-TEU containerships from CSSC Huangpu Wenchong Shipbuilding. Together the vessels will provide 18,600 TEU of nominal capacity.
The contract was signed in Guangzhou on Oct. 26 with the yard and China Shipbuilding Trading Co. (CSTC). It marks KMTC’s first newbuilding project in China and its first with China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC), the yard’s parent.
The ships will be based on Huangpu Wenchong’s own 3,100-TEU “Honghu” (Swan) design, modified to suit KMTC’s operations. Contract prices and delivery dates were not disclosed.
KMTC focuses on intra-Asia container shipping and has mostly ordered ships from yards in South Korea.
More Korean orders at the yard
Huangpu Wenchong has been winning business from Korean owners, including Sinokor, HMM, CK Line and Namsung Shipping with its unit Dongyoung Shipping. Namsung and Dongyoung signed in March for two 4,300-TEU ships and two 1,900-TEU feeders. In August, CK Line ordered two 6,400-TEU ships with options for two more.
Counting KMTC, the yard has booked 12 firm containership orders from Korean customers this year, plus two options
