Ming Yang Smart Energy Group Limited (Mingyang Group) is looking at expanding its ventures in the Philippines, including investments in port development for offshore wind projects, floating platforms, and wind turbine manufacturing.

Mingyang Group representatives recently met with Department of Finance (DOF) undersecretary Ma. Angela Ignacio and Board of Investments executive director Bobby Fondevilla to discuss offshore wind opportunities in the country, according to the DOF.

The global clean-energy technology and wind turbine manufacturer said it plans to transition from an OEM (original equipment manufacturer) supplier into a local manufacturer capable of delivering offshore wind projects at scale.

DOF said the expansion plans could strengthen domestic manufacturing and supply chains, generate jobs, and accelerate the development of the country’s offshore wind industry and expansion of renewable energy capacity.

Mingyang’s Philippine office is currently involved in a feasibility study for a 2-gigawatt floating wind project in Ilocos Norte in partnership with Buhawind Energy Northern Luzon Corp., a subsidiary of PetroGreen Energy Corp. and the Yuchengco Group of Companies, with Japan’s Kyuden International Corp.

It’s wind energy portfolio in the country includes over 500 megawatts of projects in cooperation with Philippine partners.

The China-headquartered company had also previously supplied wind turbines to Vena Energy for its Philippine wind energy projects.

In a meeting earlier this year with the Department of Trade and Industry, company officials already expressed plans for offshore and floating wind developments and the localization of an operations and maintenance center for Southeast Asia.
