The Philippines’ first commercial consignment of MD2 pineapples to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has arrived, opening a new Gulf market for one of the country’s premium tropical fruits, according to the Department of Agriculture (DA).

An 18-metric ton shipment consisting of 1,500 boxes of fresh pineapples sourced from farms in Tampakan, South Cotabato were sent out on June 6, arrived via the Port of Khor Fakkan on June 28, and was formally launched at Dubai’s Al Aweer Fruit and Vegetable Market in a ceremony attended by Philippine diplomatic and trade officials.

The shipment was organized by Davao-based exporter Mensch Fil-Am Trading in partnership with Avante Agri-Products Philippines Inc. UAE distribution is being handled by Octagon General Trading LLC, which also works with partners in Saudi Arabia and other Gulf markets to move Philippine tropical fruits, including bananas, mangoes, durian, and pomelo.

Officials said shipments are scheduled every two weeks, demonstrating ongoing buyer interest in high-quality Philippine products within a rapidly expanding food import market in the region.

The ceremonial launch brought together officials from the Philippine Embassy in Abu Dhabi, the Philippine Consulate General in Dubai, the Philippine Trade and Investment Center-Dubai, and the DA’s Office of the Agricultural Attaché-Dubai, which organized the event as part of its mandate to open new markets and connect Philippine exporters with overseas buyers.

The export initiative is part of a larger plan to lessen reliance on traditional markets by expanding the Philippines’ footprint in the Gulf Cooperation Council. This region’s growing population, expanding tourism industry, and limited local agriculture sustain strong demand for imported fresh produce, the DA said.

The initiative supports the government’s goal to boost agricultural exports, enhance logistics and post-harvest systems, and increase the competitiveness of Philippine high-value crops.
