Shipping companies in the Zamboanga Region have thrown their support behind the Maritime Industry Authority’s (MARINA) digital transformation program after participating in a training workshop on the Maritime Energy Demand Information Analysis Software (MEDIAnS), as part of the government’s push for greener, more energy-efficient domestic shipping.
During the two-day regional users’ training workshop on July 28 and 29, the companies expressed their support.
The event was organized by the Marine Environment Protection Development Service (MEPDS) in cooperation with MARINA Regional Office IX.
The workshop drew 27 participants for hands-on training covering vessel registration, voyage reporting, fuel consumption data entry, energy analytics, emissions monitoring, and use of the MEDIAnS platform.

MARINA Zamboanga regional director Farida Cunanan said the shipping industry’s priorities now extend beyond maritime safety to include energy efficiency, digitalization, environmental protection, and greenhouse gas reduction.
MEDIAnS is designed to help both regulators and shipping companies better understand vessel fuel consumption and operational efficiency, enabling more informed decision-making.
So far, 51 domestic shipping companies nationwide have expressed support for the platform’s implementation.
MEDIAnS was developed through a collaboration among MARINA, the University of the Philippines Diliman, and the Department of Science and Technology under the Science and Technology for Maritime Transport Applications project.
The platform collects and analyzes energy consumption data from Philippine-registered domestic vessels to support greenhouse gas reduction and strengthen environmental protection efforts in the maritime sector.
It was launched for pilot testing in late 2025 and has since gained traction among domestic shipping companies nationwide, aligning the Philippine domestic shipping sector with global decarbonization rules and the Maritime Industry Development Plan 2028.
